Paul and others,
The boat you spoke of (that replaced its motor with
an electric engine) is familiar to us and we have been
on board it.
Her owners, Chris and Debbie, became friends
of ours while we all lived in the same marina on the
Chesapeake. The boat was more a full time liveaboard
than full time cruiser there. We have continued to stay
in touch and Chris and Debbie. They were our first
visitors to stay aboard on our boat new Angel Louise
earlier this year while we were at Brunswick, GA -
about a week prior to Norm and his lovely Jan being
aboard for supper!
I hesitate to say a discouraging word about Chris
and Debbie's boat, but as all boats are compromises,
so are their engines. Chris did not use the boat as a
full time cruiser and on the only long cruise that
Chris took after leaving the marina (he was going
to head for Bermuda) his plans were hampered by
losing the electric engine before getting out of the
Chesapeake.
Without the sustained engine power, along with
other mishaps on the boat, he ended up having to
scrap the planned trip after getting out into the Atlantic,
and also later had to change plans about trying to
go up the coast to Maine.
They decided to ship the boat back to the Pacific
NW, Chris has taught this last school year at
Tulane in New Orleans. The electric motor would
be a lot more logical if you stayed close to a dock.
Chris marches to the beat of a different drummer
so his view may be different than mine, but I would
believe his trip might not have been abandoned
enroute and would have had a different result if
he had an engine and had the greater sustained
thrust of the original engine.

One of the guys on the CYOA (Columbia Yacht Owners Association) forum is
out there doing it now and has been for several years. He removed the
engine from his Columbia 36 and replaced it with batteries and an
electric motor. He has cruised in that boat, under electric power and
sail, from Puget Sound down to Mexico and back. Then he shipped the boat
to the Chesapeake Bay and cruised there for a year. He then shipped it
back to the PNW and is now cruising the San Juan's.
The set up is not for extended motoring, just to get in and out of
harbor and out of tight spots. He carries a small (EU2000) Honda
generator to recharge the batteries when there isn't enough sun to do it
through the solar panels. He is a Naval Architect (big ships) and is
very happy with the installation.
