It could be a bad connection, a bad starter or solenoid, or a stuck Diesel motor. Use a test light on the starter while a helper turns the key. The prev whirring noise would point toward the starter. Can you turn the motor over by hand or with a big wrench on the front pulley nut? This would eliminate a stuck Diesel. Stuck Diesels can be water in a cylinder.
