SFWIW, back in the days when I designed cranking motors, the field
application engineer for Bendix gave me a tip to re-hab "Sticky" Bendix
drives.

Remove cranking motor from engine and place in a bucket with the Bendix
drive down in a bucket.

Fill bucket with enough kerosene to cover drive and let soak 2-3 days.

Remove from bucket, drain kero, let air dry, then
re-install

Worked well on truck fleets, not sure about marine which doesn't have
the same road dirt problem.
