That sounds like a great design; simple, cheap, adaptable and effective.

I assume you're talking about screening any debris in the bilge and preventing
it from clogging the bilge pump.

I bought a piece of galvanized wire mesh that had 1/4" square holes at the
hardware store. I cut it and bent it to form an enclosure that I fitted over
the sump pump and I never had anymore problems other than having to
occasionally clean the screen cover. This option has considerable free area
for the water to flow around any debris that would otherwise obstruct the pump
suction.

Cheers ,
Bob

So far so good with Fay. No damage to the boat just some rain water in one of
the hulls from my various window and other leaks.
The bilge pump quit at some point. I guess it just had more than it can take.
I am looking at the 12 volt utility pumps at Harbor Freight and thinking about
using them instead of these crappy plastic pumps. The only thing is that the
bilge strainers are way over priced for what they are. Does anyone know of
anything that that can be made to work as a strainer or places to get cheap
ones? West wants $25.00 for a cheap plastic strainer and that is just insane.
