Norm,
 My father was a high school English teacher. I got 'C's and 'B's in all 4 
years of high school English.
 I have no idea of the proper use of the colon or the semicolon.

 I seem to remember something about the colon being proper when it precedes 
a list of things, but not if the list contains proper complete sentences. 
I bet I'm wrong though...
