This thread reminds me of one of my favorite
family stories.

My sister is a middle school Language Arts
teacher.  (I think Language Arts is the
politically correct designation for English.)  She
has banned the use of spell checkers for her
students on the grounds that they must learn to
spell before they begin using the productivity
tool.  Much like learning multiplication tables
before using a calculator.

Anyway ... the ban on spell checkers was
precipitated by the receipt of a report from one
of her students.  The treatise about three
adventurers was entitled "The Tree Exploders".  

Auto correction is pretty dangerous if you don't
read the results.
