Skip, I was wrong in reading your posting last week as being South of Cape Hatterass, and not realizing you were continuing to make delayed postings that were not accurate at the date posted. SORRY.
As to the Connecticut River, we had Angel Louise on it for 3 weeks in July, mostly for travel off the boat. But the river is one of the few in the US is pure and has no significant cities or industry on it. It is good to swim in The area - Deep River is one of the towns is composed of a bunch of really small villages due to the original land being deeded to Lord Saye and Lord Brooke, who wanted large estates for wealthy upper class folks. Few came. So there are only 6 or 7 little towns. If the Fair is on it will be worth your time to attend. We were at Chester, CT, just north of Deep River. Along the West Bank of the River is a steam train that is very popular. A lot of folks take it up the river and ride the river boat back to the start - I think it starts at Essex. On the West Side of the River is an honest to goodness Castle that was built by a retired actor that is now a state park. It is fully restored and draws raves from folks who have been there. Hamburg cove I mentioned before was mentioned to me by 2 different boaters from North Carolina and Georgia. Again, the landscape, waters and beauty is pristine. I presume you guys were at Block Island, but if not it is one day from where you are currently and is not to be missed, even if it means backtracking to get there. We made the trip to Block Islands Great Salt Pond leaving Essex, CT on the river at 10 am and arriving at Great Salt Pond at 3:45 pm. After touring the beauty of Block Island, you could head up the Long Island side of the Sound to Montauk and other places mentioned. Again, sorry I confused your postings that were from earlier times and thought they were current. (that's why I said to Lydia, I was surprised you were in such a hurry to get south, especially when hurricanes are in season!) We remain in Narragansett Harbor, only a little East of you folks. Ed Kelly (& Sue Kelly) USSV Angel Louise - a Catalac catamaran. lying Dutch Harbor Here is our google map of our anchored location: http://tinyurl.com/DutchHarbor *this location suggested by Steve Weinstein and is super to visit Newport from via Ferry from Jamestown. -oo0oo- On Aug 31, 2008, at 11:31 PM, Skip Gundlach wrote: Hi, Ed, and list, We are, really, in Deep River, leaving tomorrow. Hamburg cove has been recommended to us also by our hosts here, but only as a good anchorage; nothing to see or do. You have any more pertinent info about the area recommending we stop there rather than heading direct for Orient? As to the other dates, my other postings have specified that the Maine passage was from before and when I was at sea and didn't want to burden my son with posting to all the various lists I'm on. My logs (the yahoogroup) are contemporaneous, and our SPOT page shows our real-time passages... L8R Skip Morgan 461 #2 SV Flying Pig KI4MPC See our galleries at www.justpickone.org/skip/gallery !
