I have a 12VDC counter, the kind with the little wheels with numbers like an 
odometer, that I rigged up for a friend with a wooden boat and housed it in a 
peanut butter jar.   It counted the pump operations very well.

if I was a good boy and didn't scream too much!

IMHO, the only viable strategy for bilge pumps is redundancy.  Keep the 
original packaging and return the dead ones to West.  I’ve got one aft, one 
amidships, and 2 in sumps which will chime in if the water goes over the rim. 
The aft one has a red light facing our bed which stays on when it is running.
