Folks,this is the problem that we cruisiers get stuck with dealing with...someone comes in, and anchors thier boat..takes off and goes elsewhere the boat not tended to in thier absense...and they some wonder why they get hassled upon return or cities wish to regulate this issue.. you need to speak out not only to marathon.. but to others you see doing this.. remind them that leaving thier boat creates problems for the rest of us... water cops stop by a boat, no one there. for days, or weeks... no wonder that the owner gets told to leave when finally found...

Possible Trouble Brewing In Marathon, FL My "Cruising the Florida Keys" co-author, Morgan Stinemetz, and yours truly, have been lavish in our praise of Marathon, Florida in regards to their highly successful effort to clean up Boot Key Harbor. Where once there were dozens of sunken and semi-sunken vessels, sitting in water that was so polluted you would have to have been crazy to wet your big toe, now cruisers will find a well founded mooring field with excellent shoreside support facilities at Marathon City Marina. However, like many other coastal communities, *Marathon is having a problem with the very, very small percentage of cruisers who leave their vessels unoccupied on a mooring or at anchor for weeks or even months at a time. * Unfortunately, the city of Marathon has approached this problem with a set of DRAFT regulations concerning "abandoned" vessels. The proposed language under consideration can only be described as "ham fisted." One possible, if ludicrous, interpretation of the draft language is that anyone leaving their boat at all will be in violation. Clearly, this is NOT what the powers that be in Marathon have in mind, but while these proposed statutes are still in the draft - public comment stage, THE CRUISING COMMUNITY NEEDS TO MAKE ITS VOICE HEARD!
