I use one of those Davis mini-mega lights on my boat as a backup
to the all-around mast top anchor light. Totally agree that way up on
the stop (gee, ok it's only 28' up) does a poor job in a close up
anchorage. My light has 6 options flashing or solid white, red or
yellow. I've thought of using the flashing option but figured there
is probably some colreg rule against same. But I have used the
flashing yellow a couple of times at dusk while out away from the boat
(usually hung from the boom and over the cockpit) to help in finding
me way home quickly and easily.
