I, too, am in NC. I've been using pool tablets for about a year...BROMINE, not 
chlorine. They don't seem to really keep down growth in the strainer itself but 
do seem to keep the outflow of water from the pump stronger (maybe I'm just 
imagining this)..also I have a March pump that is water-cooled by very small 
diameter tubing. This is an achilles heel of this pump because if they become 
occluded, the pump rapidly overheats and is destroyed. The tablets are said to 
help prevent this.....
