We had this discussion on an other list for "Columbia owners".
A diesel engine is the same on a tractor or a boat in this case.
However there are certain features that a marine engine must
have and a tractor engine does not necessary needs to have.
Like special paint and anticorrosive protection for the marine environment
special marine alternator, oil change tube for easy access, different cooling
system and some stronger parts that are disigned for full load for longer
periods of time like on a sailboat that runs from five minutes to 24 hrs some
times.
hope that helps

What do they do to a tractor engine to "marinize" it? Just curious.

The Beta engine is in fact a marinized Kubota. I had been
thinking that not having to do the tank might liberate a few more dollars. I
said used because new, small marine diesels can cost $6,000 to $8,000. Someone
putting in a bigger engine might let their existing sailboat engine go for that
much.
