A quick bit of looking around on the Net shows that the basics of such a
feature already exist and are built into the hardware:

Looking further, it seems that Linux, at least, can monitor SMART
status:

I've just told my system to fetch and install both 'smartmontools' and
'smart-notifier' (the graphical 'hard disk health' notifier), so now
I've got exactly what I wanted (a classic example of the squeaky wheel
