I use Ubuntu. It's what I'm using now.

It does NOT live up to the hype.

One big problem is it will not install easily on all computers. It has
always given me a problem on install at one point or another on all the
PCs I have tried it on. This last time on my newest PC I had to first
un-install Windows to get Ubuntu to be able to see all the hard drives.
Just ridicules.
Another problem is that it often does not have the auxiliary programs
such as drivers or whatever to run all the peripherals or run them
correctly and sometimes they cannot be had for love or money.

And NO I DON"T like to use "command line" to get simple things done, one
reason I "graduated" to Graphical User Interface! I want a simple easy
to use tool, NOT a "fascinating gadget".

Also it WILL crash (regardless of what some say) and sometimes when it
does it is necessary to start a Windows operating system to get it to
work correctly again. What BS.

I have yet to be able to use ANY chart-ware programs with it, but have
not tried the open source Linux version because like much other such
stuff it needs a bunch of messing with to get it to work and I already
have several working Windows chartography programs. It won't run Visual
Passage Planner either.

The programs it does come with are 'buggy' for example the disk copy
program often freezes up and will just sit doing nothing for hours if
you let it, makes dandy but pricey 'coasters'.

Most if not all video editing programs will not work with it (and yes I
mean when run with the Windows emulation program).

It is NOT faster than Windows XP at least not on my fairly fast dual
core machine.

But the WORST problem is when you look for help on line (which as far as
I know is the only way most can get help for Ubuntu, even so called
"gurus" mostly have no clue when it comes to Linux) you are often faced
with arrogant, snobbish, amateurish and egotistical know it alls who
mostly seem to want to show all the others on line how much they know
and who will use jargon and abbreviations that require lots of time and
trouble to sort out and who seldom give direct, correct, helpful and
easy to understand and follow advice. It is worse than talking to a help
line from India!

However I stick with it for two reasons;

1) I hate Windows because they try to control what I can and cannot do
with "MY" PC and the software I bought from them.

2) Windows is horrible when it comes to security. Very few if any such
issues with Linux (yet).

3) After all, it WAS free (dollar wise in any event).

4) I hope to help promote a little competition.

Of course I expect to be 'flamed' for such honesty and openness. Fairs
fair I guess. Flame on. -Ken
