That tape shield is what causes LMR 400 to introduce noise into the system.

Heliax is made for tower runs. The jacket is thick plastic rather than
rubber like plastic and is much more abrasion resistant. With the proper
end connectors sealed properly there is no way for the water to get into
this cable and so the salt can't get in either. When you crimp a connector
onto standard coax you better make sure it's as resistant as possible to the
elements because they are all getting in there. LMR 400 even with the
factory installed connectors lets so much water in it's not funny. When we
used to use LMR 400 in microwave applications if we would get a strong rain
we would have at least one of them that would get water logged. Doesn't
happen with properly installed heliax.

The heliax connectors have rubber seals in them and if you seal up the
connector to the antenna you will have a totally watertight seal that could
be submerged and still not leak.

Subject: Re: [Liveaboard] VHF ant problem

Vern,
This cable is not tinned nor does it brag about its resistance to the
elements. The other cables woven shield is tinned with an inner aluminum
tape shield while the center conductor is copper. This cable is copper
shield with a copper clad aluminum center conductor. Doesn't sound as
saltwater resistant.

This is what I would use. http://www.rfparts.com/heliax_FSJ150A.html Not
much bigger than regular coax.

I am very partial to Andrew's Heliax. I noticed a big difference when
changed my repeater over from LMR 400 to 1/2" heliax.

This is actually what I have on my repeater to duplexer connections then the
1/2" going to the antenna from the duplexer.
