We used to fly the cone when we were motoring, but most of the time if
we don't have a sail up I think it should be pretty obvious that we
are motoring.  It's only when motor sailing that you need it (IMHO)

We usually put up the anchor ball when we put up the anchor light.
They are on the same hoist - the anchor light is dark activated.  So
in the dark we have a light, and if it is light we have the ball.
