Marce: I'm with you, Ben. On a hellish passage from Bermuda where everything broke, half the crew were sick and we ran out of propane, we abandoned the watch schedule and all pitched in where we could. Bad move. No one was sharp enough to pilot safely and we experienced one close call after another. Luckily we arrived in one piece but we vowed never again to do a passage of any length without a firm watch schedule. It really amounts to a rest schedule, and like you said, if you know you need to be alert from 0200 to 0600 you take responsibility for being fed, watered and rested. And when you are resting, you have complete confidence that the on-watch is awake, alert and aware.
