Norm, your solution sounds great for a motorized dinghy such as yours.

When I operate my dingy under oars, I use an all-round white nav light
mounted on top of a climber's helmet, with a cord leading down from the
helmet to battery placed under the thwart on which I sit while rowing. I
wear the helmet, of course.  It is very visible, and the helmet keeps
the light from getting in my eyes.
