You're certainly welcome, Ed. I picked up a trap once off the south
coast of Puerto Rico, while single-handing in 4-6' seas; when I went
overboard (with a line around my waist tied to one of my winches), the
stern was pumping and down about that amount, and would have crushed my
head like a grape if I got caught under it just once. That kind of thing
can _really_ motivate you to get it right, with tools that'll get it
done *right now*. :)

Onset (which is where I'm guessing you are) is currently predicted to have
30-40kt by tomorrow night, gusting up to 50. On a broader scale, Boston
currently looks like this:

             12Z THU 00Z FRI 12Z FRI 00Z SAT 12Z SAT 12Z SUN 12Z MON
             00Z FRI 12Z FRI 00Z SAT 12Z SAT 12Z SUN 12Z MON 12Z TUE
BOSTON MA 34 X X( X) 36(36) 19(55) X(55) X(55) X(55)
BOSTON MA 50 X X( X) 4( 4) 10(14) X(14) X(14) X(14)
BOSTON MA 64 X X( X) X( X) 4( 4) X( 4) X( 4) X( 4)

So, you have a one in three chance of gale force winds tomorrow, and a
one in five the day after. Storm force is only a one in ten probability,
and hurricane is a one in twenty five at the moment. *IF* that could be
relied on, that wouldn't be too bad.

Of course, the hurricane will do whatever it wants to, rather than what
NOAA wants it to, so it's best to take the good precautions you're
taking.

That all sounds like good, reasonable prep.

Ed, if the two of you have decided to get off, then please do so ASAP
once you've finished the boat prep. In the absolutely worst-case
scenario, boats can be replaced, but lives can't. "Where" isn't really a
question of anything more than convenience; there are hotels, businesses
- heck, if you knocked on someone's house door and said "we just got off
our boat and are trying to hide from the storm", 99% of the people out
there would put you up. You can find the "where".

I've stayed aboard through a number of storms, and in at least one case
saved the boat from coming ashore by running the engine and steering her
into the wind, which let the anchors reset. At other times, I've secured
her as well as possible and went ashore. It's always a personal decision
based on lots of factors, and there's not a "right" decision for all
times and places. Decide what you'll do, then do it decisively - but
don't ever wobble.

I wish you, Sue, and the "Angel Louise" the best of luck and an easy
storm passage.
