Just what I was going to suggest. If you use Linux, it's easy - assuming
you've got a machine you can connect to State-side.
ssh -ND 8080 remote_host # Bind to port 8080 on the US-based host
Now, change the SOCKS proxy settings in your Firefox (or whatever
browser) to use "localhost" and port 8080. Done deal; you're surfing
from the States no matter where you are.
I also dimly recall doing this on Windows via Putty, but it's been
years, so I don't recall the step-by-step.
