I read an article on a study from medline that found people who had taken
statin
choleterol medications such as Zocor and Lipitor for at least 5 years and then
stopped were much less likely to die from heart attack or stroke than
those that
hadn't. Apparently many elderly stop taking these medications due to cost or
other reasons after they retire but still seem to be protected.

FYI
Jim --> Cholesterol meds has nothing to do with dissolving the clot or
"clogging". There are other anticoagulant meds such as Aspirin, Heparin,
Coumadin, Plavix, etc etc depend on CHAD score for stroke risk.
Ahmet --> Diet and exercise is always the preferred and best way to control
cholesterol level. Also lifestyle change such as nicotine and alcohol free,
stress free. There are factors that we can't change such as gene. Many people
able to wean off the cholesterol meds with proper exercise and good diet
control. Diet control involving low salt, low sugar, low fat, high fiber, lots
of fresh vegetable and fresh fruit. (Canned fruit full of syrup containing high
sugar, unless no other way to get fresh fruit, then can fruits better than no
fruit!).
PS-diabetes, age, high blood pressure, heart failure all increase stroke risk.
ps- obesity(lack of exercise and bad diet), nicotine, alcohol, stress,
contribute to heart attack.

Um, *my* understanding - NOT an MD - is that actually the cholesterol
meds treat the symptom and do *nothing* to fix the root issue. They
lower what the tests measure, but not the actual degree of 'clogging'
in your arteries.
