I would think it has something to do with the shaft seal on the pump. I believe these are centrifugal pumps. An accumulator would keep a constant pressure on the shaft seal even when the pump is idle. Running the pump only to supply water to the faucet would not. Martec sells a magnetically coupled centrifugal pump and has no seal to fail. It's pricey, but dependable. I used them in Marine A/C and refrigeration systems I installed.
