Hi Lee and others,

On Angel Louise we have been using apps for a couple years, first
those for the iPhone/iPod Touch, now those specially dedicated for the
iPad specifically.

Those that we used for the first two years were:
NAVIONICS: US EAST
NAVIONICS: CARIBBEAN
(those both cost $19.95 back then and are no longer sold)

NAVIONICS now sells an HD App, more expensive but looks good.
We have since purchased:
NAVIONICS HD: Europe HD (+\- $60)
NAVIONICS HD: UK & HOLLAND HD (=\- $50)
We plan to use the above two as backup after crossing the Atlantic
this Spring/Summer.
After you download while online you use from the machine memory.

Additionally we have purchased and like:
iGrib (fabulous app for $6 that downloads and shows all grid charts
- must be online to load em)

iNavX by the maker of the MacENC program we use aboard... Gold
Standard in US Chartplotting Apps IMHO for the US and Bahamas.
AyeTides
Buoys

For US Wx I purchased (on BoatUS recommendation) MarineCast (but I
think it sucks)

GPS ENHANCEMENT with DEDICATED GPS APP & HARDWARE:
With any of the items you can upgrade the GPS chip, or if you use a
WiFi only iPAD or iPAD Touch - have a GPS added, by purchase of the
Bad Elf GPS from www.bad-elf.com ($99) It is much faster and
stronger than the GPS chip that is in the 3G and iPhone units, and
works with all software that is location sensitive in the iPad App
Store.
