Ed, et al: We used Navionics Caribbean on a Droid X all the way from Key West to the Rio Dulce and it served as a great backup for the chartplotter. For an app, it was expensive ($30.00 IIRC) but, for a "chartplotter: if was super cheap. As we went south, we reached a point around Belize where it became difficult and, then, nearly impossible to get a GPS fix any longer. I'm not sure whether it was software or hardware or, maybe, the coverage just isn't that good down there. Back on land in Indiana, it works fine and, as a bonus, acts as a quick and accurate answer to the age old question of "Where am I?"
Not needing to have Internet or cell phone coverage in order for Navionics to work is a big plus for me. I also invested in EarthNC but found it to be much less useful than the Navionics app. I may be wrong, but I think EarthNC requires an Internet connection in order to get the local charts. As always, YMMV.
