I, too, have an ancient (cir. 1910) Singer that is built like a brick
outhouse.  I am confident that it could sew through just about anything.  I
may even have a walking foot.  But, it only does straight stitches.  I
understand that for sail repair one needs to be able to do zig-zag stitches.
Is that correct?  Why?  Could I still use the Singer for projects with
Sunbrella?  Thanks in advance for your advice.
