Zig zag with a standard outdoor upholstery thread (as recommended by a guy who does canvas work), I forget the weight. I wanted to use Tenara (gore-tex) but I couldn't get the machine to work with it.

We have a Singer 237 that we bought on Ebay for around $100. They are often advertised as "industrial", but aren't. However it does about 95% of what we do on our boat. I have used it to reattach the sacrificial cover on our furling jib.

Vern, to do the job right you need a walking foot machine. Like the sailrite LSZ-1

From what I am reading you can get a walking foot add-on for almost any machine. Looks like the main reason for the walking foot is when you are doing multiple layers which I don't plan on doing too much.
