I am not fully sure I know what you are asking, but I am a net controller on
the InterCon Net (14.300 MHz) and could alert other controllers to listen for
your son during his trip. The InterCon Net runs from 0700 - 1200 ET daily and
is immediately followed by the Maritime Mobile Service Net (MMSN) on the same
frequency and which runs until 2200 ET. He could simply check in whenever it's
convenient for him. Phone patch capability is often available to connect him
to telephone lines if he desires (two-way toll free).
Information on the nets can be found at http://www.interconnet.org and
http://www.14300.net.
Both nets welcome check-ins and give priority to martime mobile stations. This
all assumes, of course, that he is a licensed ham operator and has a ham radio
aboard.
Alternatively, hams could monitor Herb's service and confirm that your son
checked in with in him.

I am in Rochester NY. the boat is sv Annabelle currently waiting in Flores,
Azores. while in port there he has Internet access. As of yesterday, Herb is
saying he should be able to depart on Thursday. He is bringing a client's boat
back to Newport. His own boat is on the hard at the moment, waiting to go back
in when he gets back.
Any assistance from a ham or list member who could relay info would be greatly
appreciated. You can contact me via private email.

What city are you in? I am from Ithaca and know some Ham Radio operators. A
Ham with a good location and antenna could help you. You could ask again on
the Liveaboard list, give your son's boat name and some of the SSB equipped
boats could listen, then relay to you by phone or e.mail. Trying to use a SSB
in a populated area, there may be too much noise. I usually have difficulty in
marinas.
Are you landlocked due to the Erie Canal closure? The canal may not open
NEXT year, see www.tug44.org for info. I was able to sail south via Montreal
and Lake Champlain, it added about 8 days plus about $400 in lock fees. The
Chambly Canal was part of this, it closes Oct 10.
