Ahoy All,
Well said Philip.
The trade-off between convenience and reliability is the essence of many
situations we encounter.
More work up front (bolting together the ring terminals of my shore power cable
instead of simply “plugging in”) makes for less work down line (a very reliable
connection). Included in the mix is the fact that I only do this when I haul
out, usually once a year.
My fuel system (a subject I have documented at length on the List) has more
“stuff” (valves, filters, pumps, gauges) than what usually comes with a stock
boat, but that complexity insures that my engine always receives a plentiful
supply of clean fuel.
The “keep it simple stupid” approach increases reliability because there is
less “stuff” to maintain, but creates a relatively inflexible specialist
situation. Complexity brings more maintenance, more “stuff”, but brings greater
versatility and the ability to meet changing conditions.

It may be less convenient, but the problems approach zero.
