Thanks for the very helpful advice Norm. I do indeed have an external regulator. There are no markings on it that I could see, hence I thought it was just a part of the Kenyon package, probably 30 years ago.
It had not occurred to me that it might be in equalizing mode. Actually, it never occurred to me that the regulator was that sophisticated, but I'll check anyway. I will apply 12 V to the alternator directly and see what happens. And yes, it could be the regulator itself, kind of tired after 30 years - but I want to make sure of this before I replace it. I have a hand-held clamp-on ammeter and measured the current delivered to the batteries - about 20A +/- total to three batteries in parallel, all the house batteries. None of the batteries should have been seriously discharged. Engine battery is separate and has a separate alternator. I have long wanted a permanent ammeter in the line so I had a better idea of what's going on, and think that will be my next addition. Thanks again for help Norm.
