With all due respect to your hard work and effort getting things
changed over, not knowing the answer to this question means that
there wasn't a long enough testing cycle.

Fields getting updated unknowingly is a fairly large bug. Not that
it is a bug, but as you say, you don't know. And with something that
large that has no known answer, we have to assume that it is
something out of the ordinary (a bug).
