Thanks for the tips Alexander. I added the mentioned kernel config
options, ran make oldconfig, and built a CD with that kernel. It failed
to boot as well. Pressing SysRq+T showed lots of data, scrolling past the
screen buffer. I took pictures with a digital camera and put them on my
site below (about 1MB total in pictures) as there was way too much text to
type accurately. All the pictures are available here:

The scrolled-up buffer starts at picture screen01 and ends at screen08.
