yup, tried with no parameters for booting on the laptop

yup, I use static ips on my network so dhcp never works.

yes, I edited the wpa_supplicant conf files and added the session id
data. this, when wpa_supplicant was run, enabled the network, in
conjunction with net-setup to actually assign ip and dns to the interface.

nope, no dhcp.

It does survive hibernation, I have let the system go into hibernation
three times and never had any problems in getting back. wireless
connection never lost at all.
wpa_supplicant dumps status reports to stdout on the livecd, in both cli
only and in terminal windows the network activity is constantly dumping
to sdtout, it should be going to either a log file or /dev/null. [ log
file could eat resources to quickly in the livecd environment ]
on shutting the terminal window down and opening a new one, the status
reports do stop getting dumped to stdout.
each wireless connection has a unique network session id it need to
submit to enable connectivity. the config files also need to have
encryption key data if the connection is encrypted. these will always
need to be edited for anyone doing a wireless connection on the livecd,
unless the net-setup adds network domain data to the settings.
below is one of the conf files, with the change I need to do marked.
I'll edit the /root/README to include the edit information and post it
if it's not in there already.
# Static WEP keys
ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
network={
ssid="example wep network" << I change to jaqui-greenlees.net
key_mgmt=NONE
wep_key0="abcde"
wep_key1=0102030405
wep_tx_keyidx=0
}
