I started looking at this. Cherry-picking
ca05601cd2a1b75050538ef2e78de205f1300692 requires at least
bd7f3f8a3ed70586f2b6a68b267b83d18e6fbdb4 and
6616d84ceed9869a8044c590ff12865ef2ea74d6 just to make it apply (even with a
little manual help). And then it still won't compile.
There's been a lot of commits in this area, and pulling it all in or untangling
it is too high risk this late in the process; it will just have to wait for the
next release, sorry.
