Of course it could, but what do we need lfo controllers for then :)
You are making a sine wave with automation instead of using the lfo
controller! 
* Perhaps you want it to stop for a while in the song? OK! Then you just
automate the lfo controller amount to 0 for a while.
* Perhaps you want your own specific pattern to repeat? OK! There is no way
for that right now, I admit, but if lfo controllers could load user made
waveform, such as TripleOSC can, then I think that would do it!

Or is auto-extendible automation useful for more? Anyway, it doesn't stop
you from coding it! :D
