Why not make the shortcut for editing the note's length Alt-scrollwheel? Up/down scrolling would then be just scrolling, without any modifier key. -> no confusion

I haven't used a daw that allows this. You end up in a situation where you have to be very careful whether or not the mouse is over a note when scrolling and before you know it you mucked up your note. I'm with Vesa on this, but it is all hypothetical until the change is attempted and we can try it out.
