Well that's the thing, why encourage someone to implement a feature
which isn't wanted and probably won't get accepted upstream? No one
likes doing pointless work...

Several people (including me) have already stated that they don't think
using the scroll wheel for note length control is a good idea, and with
good reason - it'd cause the same sort of usability problems as
currently exist with the instrument window: You'd constantly have to be
careful about the mouse cursor which would make navigating a pain. And
since we already have a feature for quickly and easily resizing notes
(in 1.1), this just becomes a bad idea, all things considered.

It's much better to encourage new contributors to implement something
which is actually wanted. That's (part of) the reason for this mailing
list, to discuss new features and decide which of them should be
implemented and how.
