Meh... sorry, this just seems needlessly convoluted. I think we should just allow colouring the patterns in any colour the user wants BUT first implement the option in preferences to disable/disallow all custom colours. I think this is by far the simplest solution and should satisfy all sides.
Also, as a side note - colours should be applied per-track, not per-pattern. Per-pattern is just clunky UI, with not much use, the real value of colours is distinguishing tracks I think.
