no. we use the "track name" as identifier in certain places, so this
would be a larger change. also, this would cause problems or at least
headaches for MIDI/drum/new drum tracks, which can be converted into
each other.
and with my proposed "prerendering" feature, your problem is probably
solved:

i assume that you have a "snare" MIDI track, and a "snare" wave track
where the output of your synthesizer gets recorded ("bounced") to, right?
with my feature, you don't even need two tracks for this. there is just
the "snare"-midi track, which manages bouncing and effects etc etc on
its own.
