That's the "Track Off" symbol.
It's the same operation as the "Off" button on the lower left of all
 mixer strips.

It is important because unlike "Mute", "Off" turns off ALL processing
 of the track (or is supposed to, some aspects may still operate...)
 thus really helps conserve Jack processing period time.
Got many audio tracks with rack plugins, or many midi tracks, 
 slowing the app down? Turn "Off" some tracks.

Technically one does not operate it while playing, but it shouldn't 
 really mess up too bad in play, although I'm not sure why it exhibits
 your symptoms.
