Even if you could use html5 as a front end (just because you might be able to do a thing doesn't mean you should) what would it talk to as a back end without connectivity? That would have to be platform specific. Can you give any examples of an application that does this? I can't think of any but maybe they exist. When I say without connectivity I mean none at all, as in the program could be used even when the device is in offline or airplane mode.

Dear Shawn

As far as Android device is concerned, we have a member volunteering to offer
one. So I am not touching it.
The second point suggesting developing the new app as a web based application.
i.e. developing the app in HTML5 so the front end will be a web based interface
and this shall be running on local device. Hence, it will not need net
connectivity at all.

This line of approach will free us for porting to a particular platform.

I hope I am clear this time.

Besides Dotwalker there is another app which uses open street maps. Check on:

I keep hearing about these sub $100 android devices, so hear's a challenge for
anyone, find a sub $100 android unlocked phone in Canada. The hardware would at
least have to have a gps and enough memory to hold a reasonable amount of map
data. It would also have to perform well with talkback. I look forward to
seeing what people come up with.
As for loadstone being a web app that's not what loadstone is all about. The
idea is to have it work without a data plan or connectivity of any kind. Of
course if you have connectivity even better for data loading and other features
but the basics will function offline.
