The discussion broke down when some wanted to use XML as the serialization scheme while others wanted to continue to use Java serialization. I was in the Java serialization camp. But the open source community is a "put your money where your mouth is" type of group. Since I was not writing or participating strongly in it myself, I didn't push very hard.
Since then, the folks who were going to undertake the effort (presumably using XML), were haven't been heard from in a while. If you've got some good ideas (and time/energy to spend) about how to improve the serialization, I think it's worth a go.
