Disclaimer: I am not a committer, discount accordingly.

I am 100% in support of this. I think it would be a
bit unpleasant to remove the docs that were included
with 1.1.3, but as I understand it, that is not your
intention.

It sounds like you're saying that you are going to
write a book and sell it. Coincidentally, it's a
book about a piece of software that you are quite
familiar with, because you wrote a very large
portion of it.

I don't think you have any intent of preventing
the development of a good free manual. I'm even
guessing that, if someone writes one and contributes
it to the ASF, you would be happy to see it added to
the Log4j package. It sounds like you're just saying
that you don't intend to be one of the lead
contributors to the free manual. How could anyone
find fault with this? In the software side of
Log4j you've already made an enormous contribution
to Open Source software. Even if you assume that
computer scientists have an obligation to the
community which must be payed in Open Source or
Free projects, you have clearly already exceeded it.

On the obligation angle, I feel that the greatest
debt owed to the community is to other Open Source
developers. I find it highly unlikely that those
who contribute to the Open Source community will
*need* the high end manual (as we tend to be
tinkerers who like to learn by experimentation).
I also think that as Open Source developers who
would like to be able to spend more time on our
Open Source projects, we should be delighted to
see Ceki making some money in a parallel channel
to his (colossally successful) project.

"I need some water" "How much?" "Enough to put a fire out"
"Where do you want it?" "On the flames"
