as long as we mark the old file as deprecated, and with loud warnings to all that it's being removed in the next major release after 1.3, I'm all in favour of backward compatability, as I believe that will get everyone to transistion easily to 1.3.

Still, it might be worth poking a message to velocity-dev to see if they have a release coming up in the near term, and would they mind considering going to 1.3?

Velocity is currently building against log4j 1.2 only since they use log4j 1.2's o.a.l.RollingFileAppender. Migration to 1.3's o.a.l.rolling.RollingFileAppender is not a viable options since I'm sure they don't want to mandate force their users to migrate to 1.3.

After reviewing 1.2's o.a.l.RollingFileAppender, it looks like it would be fairly simple to build an emulation that delegated to 1.3's o.a.l.rolling.RollingFileAppender. I haven't attempted it yet, but expect I could have it ready in fairly short order. I suspect that it may be controversial, so I'm throwing it out for discussion.
