/dev/log is a Unix Domain Socket and I would think there would not be a means
to reliably write to it in pure Java code.  Can you get away with writing to it
with file IO?  If so, if you could provide a reference or docs?

If not, then this is just a duplicate of the request for a native
SyslogAppender (bug 27363).
