I now think the problem is that the classes in question log *a lot* - so much that they overwhelm the appender, creating a huge backlog, which the AsyncLoggerThread is trying to finish. The shutdown hook apparently closes all files, which is the right thing to do - but it would be even better to join the appender thread before doing that. I'm attaching a very small intuitive program that exhibits the problematic behavior, just by logging a lot.
