You can implement length() as

return charSequence == null ? 0 : charSequence.length();
}

Sane code should check the length before calling {{msg.charAt()}} (usually this
is done in a loop from zero to length() anyway), so no need to check for null
in the charAt or subSequence methods, I would say.
