Looking at all my settings, all the FileAppenders look something like:
log4j.appender.File.File=${catalina.base}/logs/EDITS-Maintenance.log
This works, although it doesn't solve the mystery of the missing file.

Subject: Log file Mystery
Greetings,
I'm hoping someone could clear a minor mystery for me..
In previous versions of Tomcat the Log4j log file was alway placed
relative to the parent Tomcat directory..
Therefore a setting of..
log4j.appender.R1.File=logs/somename.log
.. would place "somename.log" into the Tomcat/logs directory.
In the latest Tomcat this is not happening, in fact it appears that this
file is never written, and there are no errors.. (Though interestly the
Tomcat that JBuilder is using does seem to allow the file to be written..??)
Anyone have any clues as to what is interfering with log4j ability to
write that log file..???
John...
