You should give the new slf4j-log4j binding a try. You can download it from
http://www.slf4j.org
It provides the parameterized logging functionality that you
mentioned you wanted. It works with vanilla log4j 1.2.x or 1.3.x. If
your priority is performance, then try NLOG4J.

There have been a lot of changes from 1.2 to 1.3. The only reason I
opted for 1.3 is because of the ("some data {}", value) functionality.
Is it possible to retrofit that into 1.2? Moving to 1.3 seems quite
painful with all the changes.
