I am also facing similar issue. log file compression never worked for me. i am
using version 2.2
below is the configuration

filePattern="${logdir}\\Common\\$${date:yyyy-MM}\\common-%d{MM-dd-yyyy}-%i.log.gz">

<SizeBasedTriggeringPolicy size="1 MB"/> </Policies>
<DefaultRolloverStrategy max="10"/> </RollingRandomAccessFile>
Any pointer?
