Dear Cheerful Friends of Logic,

Over the last two weeks, there have been global protests in reaction to the
police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. As part of this, a group of
academics have united under the hashtag #ShutDownAcademia. They propose a
24 hour research strike, with the plan being not simply to boycott research
for the day but to spend research hours engaged in activities to combat
systemic racism.

The supergroup is meant to be an inclusive and welcoming space. We have a
global reach and are open to logicians from every part of the world. So it
behooves us to take part in this moment.

Here's what I am proposing: as part of the global #ShutDownAcademia
<https://www.shutdownstem.com/> and #ShutDownSTEM strikes planned for *June
10*, the supergroup will host a 24 hour *Day of Inclusive Logic*.

*How it works*:
We will have a zoom room setup for this purpose (this time with a waiting
room!). You will find a signup sheet for slots in a 24 hour period (let's
say 0:00 GMT-23:59 GMT, just to keep things concrete) at the end of this
document
<https://docs.google.com/document/d/11HsWhkuQDz5vs80fR14-5iG7rkzFlkPYUoZyQS5jvIo/edit?usp=sharing>.
Interested people can sign up to be the host/meeting leader during a time
block (please include your email address as well). I've volunteered to host
the first few hours to kick things off. Feel free to sign up for times that
work for you, given your sleep habits and timezone. I will add everyone who
signs up as a host to the meeting, then send around a link to the zoom room
to the full supergroup mailing list. (This email is only going to about a
quarter of the full list)

Also on this document is a section where we can propose actions to take
during the meetings. I have populated it with a small number of things we
can do as starting points, but folks should feel free to add their own
ideas. Should you choose to host or attend part of this marathon of
inclusivity, try to work (and to get anyone else who comes along to help)
to accomplish items listed in the document and/or to identify further
things that should be added to the list.

24 hours is not enough time for us to address the issue of systemic racism
in our own fields let alone to address the issue of systemic racism in the
academy. But it's a starting point, and we hope it leads to more work and
better ideas of this sort.

Yay for (inclusive) logic!

Shay
